Love encounters Hutzpah, Blargh, and Meh

by Craig on March 22, 2011

The following are words I see, understand, and even use. But before I began reading blogs in this community – I didn’t even know they existed.

“Blargh”

“Meh”

“Gah”

“emoticon” 🙂

“Hawt”

and of course my very favorite…

Heart, used as a verb.

I heart heart, used as a verb.

I heart heart, used as a verb so much, that the names of these blogs were almost

I Heart Love

and

I Heart Scripture

Yes, yes they were.

I told my sister.

She replied, paraphrasing here, “Blargh! Meh! Gah!” 🙁

Well that was disconcerting,

and a little disappointing.

Because I had my heart set on “I Heart”.

Instead, what was an easy choice became a major burden. Because this was the night I had already decided to register my domain names. And the stuff I read told me that once you get a name,  register it like lightning. Because you don’t want to come up with a great name, wait until later – and – Gah – someone else took it in the meantime.

I decided it was time to bring God into the equation.

Funny, I waited until then. Hmmm.

It was about 2AM, I laid on the bed, closed my eyes, and asked for help. I told God I was gonna give him 10 minutes to help me out on this. I understood it was a tight deadline – told him sorry.

I realized after blabbing for a little – I was using up all of the minutes with me talking – and no listening. So He and I arranged for some roll over minutes.

Meaning –  I reset the timer on my phone.

I was serious about that time limit on God.

I think of this now – as I’m in the middle of blogging a series on prayer, that we have an awfully nice God.

I just gave the God of all things

a 10 minute time limit

to inspire me.

That’s Hutzpah!

I know from Hutzpah.

It was my first Semester in college. English Comp 101. Professor Kaminsky told us we could write about anything we wanted for our research paper…

except Religion.

I walked in for our first office appointment, some research already done, and writing, and showed him my topic…

“The Crucifixion of Jesus”.

Professor Kaminsky, by the way…

Jewish.

Yes, yes he was.

He told me I had Hutzpah.

I asked him what it was.

He told me to look it up (there was no Google back then). He handed me a dictionary. And there it was.

“unmitigated gall and brass”

I remember that definition clearly to this day – 406 years later.

Which brings me back to…

I gave God a 10 minute time limit to inspire me.

Yes, yes I did.

So I re-closed my eyes. And. just. shut. up.

God knew what I wanted. I didn’t need to be all wordy with him. I opened my mind. Through it ran “heart – heart – heart”, like little fuzzy lambs jumping over a fence. But I think that was because I really hearted heart.

Then came a funny looking lamb.

It was the word “deep”. “Hmmm I thought”

Deep into Scripture – Deep into Love.

And beeeeeeeep – the timer went off.

I hearted the new names. I registered them.

The next morning I told my sister, and she said, paraphrasing here,

“Those are Hawt!” 🙂

She continued, “If  you’re anything – it’s deep.”

I know my sister – it was only kind of a compliment.

I say all this to say this…

She also kids me about my “systems”. I had systems for studying, and for cleaning, and t.v. watching, and petting the cat – well – everything. So if she were reading this today she’d say something like – “I knew it – he’s got a prayer system.”

And I kinda do.

And I’m OK with that.

Just thought I’d share.

Tomorrow I put my Add riddled brain right back on track again.

Oooooh – wait – tomorrow is an Easter poem I’m writing.

No, that’s on Deep into Scripture.

Meh!

Tomorrow’s fine – “who art in heaven” is tomorrow.

In God’s love.

I’m smiling too. I SO missed reading you – and I missed having you here. This one was just a shallow dip though 🙂 God Bless you Melissa!!

I really enjoyed reading how you struggled with your blog names. They are SO important. I once taught a course to undergraduates on cross-cultural relationships. The first 3 years I taught it the title of the course was “Cross-cultural Caring.” Typically, 9/10 of the class was female. The following year I called it “Living and Working Where Cultures Collide” and the class was 50/50. I never changed the title after that and consistently got an even gender distribution.

By the way, I love your titles. Your sister is right. “Deep” suits you! Have a wonderful day, and tell Laska she(?) can be a guest on my blog any time.

Blessings,
Dawn

It’s good “talking” to you,

Dawn, thanks to you, too; I learn so much from Craig, and I also learn so much from the rest of the community (I love the way you put that) that shares afterward! There is such a multiple blessing in this place!

Craig, I think your titles are perfect. I Heart Love would have been nice yet would have kinda kept it in the cutesy or warm, fuzzy realm…Deep Into Love allows for cute, warm/soft, and deep all at once-more of a one-size-fits-all title. Some of the things you have written about love that address the tougher, more painful aspects have been vital…and Deep Into…makes way for that. Just my tu cens.. (I also like what you have written on the right side of your title boxes.)

I am liking your ‘prayer system’ muchly so will have to admit I am curious, now, about your ‘study system’. Feel free to share! 🙂 (Deep into love to study?)

I imagine God smiling broadly at your giving Him a time limit…:) I sure did. I plead guilty to that one, at times, also. For sure.

Study was last done in Seminary – I just had my way. Thank you for noticing my right side – I heart the right side – I totally heart my twitter bird. I’m not planning on anymore time limits on God for a smile – I suspect his smile might become increasingly less broad. 🙂

Craig,

Craig,

Please stroke Laska backwards when you tell him (glad to have this gender “thing” settled) I am a dog person. Assure him that the dogs are not interested in cyberspace. They are not writers. I suspect they think writing is rather primitive since they are able to read minds. I’ve noted that their intelligence quotients seem to rise in direct proportion to the possibility of getting a treat. Hence, they are easily distracted.

Rest easy, Laska,
Dawn

^.^ Laska told me that he understands your subtle yet, to him, obvious attempt to make your dogs appear to have the intelligence of cats. He also says cats never receive treats from people – they control the people into giving them. He lastly says, and I quote, “duh – uv korse dogz doent rite”!

Just relaying the message

Craig,

Tell Laska that both my husband and I were laughing out loud at his banter. The dogs slept right through it all. I don’t want to purport to speak for them, I’m just reporting that they did not expend their canine energy to gather around the computer for Laska’s reply. I think that is double insurance that Laska will be safe if he ever wants to guest blog over at dschondog. Perhaps we could even call ourselves dschoncat for a day to prevent any misimpression that he is colluding with the opposite species. I hope you can express this to him for me, Craig, in an manner befitting his felineness.

Much respect,
Dawn

Loving it here . . .so funny! And I enjoyed the story of you naming your blogs and timing God. Your college professor was right . . .hutzpah. ha! Not to be mistaken for Laska language . . .hert pa. Totally different things!
God bless you and your deepness into Him!

Isn’t it funny. We take our time when God asks us to do something (sometimes, not always), and yet we expect God to move NOW!

Michelle…such a good point-we just don’t hold ourselves to the same standard; we are so fickle and inconsistent…with God, no less!

Ok – not funny.

But it’s a little funny…
