Love becomes a habit (and my first givaway ever)

by Craig on December 28, 2011

A couple of hundred pairs of feet mulling around…
hardly any of the feet knew each other…
it was a Christian writers’ conference.

Every day there were writing classes, but the big thing was grabbing 15 minute, face to face appointments with editors from Christian magazines and major Christian publishing houses. It was the opportunity to pitch, privately and live, your article or book ideas.

Anyway…one day in between appointments and classes…

I spotted a woman…70ish…red hair…wire glasses…
sitting off to herself, making calls, organizing papers…
and a big pile dropped…
and she slowly reached for it…
but I won the race.

I introduced myself…
I was me…
I talked…
I heart talking.

But she said she already knew me…

“I see you. I’ve been watching. Always with that smile on your face, making other people smile.”

Thinking she was just an attendee I asked her what she was “pitching”.
She told me she was listening to “pitches”…
because she was the editor of a devotional booklet…
this one…

She asked why I was there – and one of the reasons I attended was to pitch this…

Love in 365 loveable bite sized chunks – my little Love flippy calendar thing… another story for another time.

Anyway, she leaned into me and said…

“I’ve noticed that in you – love, God’s love – you spread it around like glitter.”

Then she
pitched me
on writing a little devotional on 1 Cor 13 love…
for her.

It’s the only thing I’ve ever had published – and been paid for.
And since being published, I’ve had a bunch of these sitting in my closet.

A month of love…
28 days to take one tiny aspect of love…
and practice it for just one little day.

Kind of an ancient descendant to this blog.

I almost didn’t link with Ann today…

… because her topic was, The Practice of New Habits…

and I really didn’t think I had anything to add.

But then I remembered learning in college that anything we do for 28 straight days becomes a habit. And there just happen to be 28 “loves” to consider in my humble little devo. I couldn’t resist the magic of the matching numbers…

And so…

I thought…

why not cultivate the habit…

of…

source

I’ve never done a giveaway before.
I don’t have much to give, but…
I do have these “28 days of love” booklets that were published.
Each day…one adorable little piece of 1 Cor 13 love to work on…for just one day…

for 28 straight days…precisely long enough to make…

a habit.

Here’s the first page…

In this year of blogging I’ve learned how giveaways work. You enter by subscribing to the blog, and following on twitter, and “liking” a Facebook page, and leaving a comment. But, you don’t have to do any of those. I’d heart it if you subscribed, or followed me on twitter, or left a comment. But you don’t have to – except you have to leave a comment otherwise I won’t know that you want one.

28 days to make 1 Cor 13 Love a habit.

And it’s free!

I’ll just stick it in an envelope, and mail it to you.

And it was good enough for me to get paid a pretty penny...or two

When you leave your comment I’ll have your e-mail addy…
and I’ll follow-up to get your mailing addy…
and I’ll get one of these out in the mail to you by next week…
and you’ll be brimming with love by Valentine’s Day.

That’s it – no contest – no commitments…
just 30 days to begin to form the “habit” of love…

because Ann Voskamp made me do it…

Dear Craig,

I’m glad you left a photo of the first page here. It is fantastic! I would love to have one of your booklets. I would heart it if you’d sign it, too. I know, I know, “Give a mouse a cookie and…” but would you please, please, please?

I really need all your lessons on love and would love to make the journey through this booklet. This should fill the space between Advent and Lent nicely. I’m cleaning the wax off my cradle to cross wreath getting ready for Lent, but was wondering what I would do in the meantime. My husband and I have gotten used to reading the Bible, doing the Jesse tree devotion, reading a book on the constitution (long story) and finishing with a prayer from Valley of Vision. Now that there is no Jesse tree devotion, it feels like there is a hole in our morning routine that needs filled. Twenty-eight days of love would do nicely (we’ll figure out what to do day 29 since this year is a leap year).

I have about 2 dozen jars of Aumiller Family Healing Salve that I made in a box in my closet. They are left over from last year’s family reunion. Unlike love, salve is a bit risky as a giveaway, though, but it stirred my thinking.

Love this,
Dawn

sign it – you’re a funny girl! Maybe I’ll just have Laska put his paw print on it – he has far more chance of ever being famous than me. And by the way – I hope you know that I saw this * the other day.

The devotional was done according to their style – a Bible passage on top – and a quote below – then my blah blah – then an “insight” at the bottom. Oh, and put me in line for a jar of healing salve – Lord knows I’ve got some bruises. Anyway, thank you as always Dawn – and God bless you and yours.

Thank you so much. I’ve been looking at something different to do in the evenings with my husband. The mornings are with the preschooler’s devos and we sure would like something for us grownups 🙂 Love life with littles, but at times it seems that is all I get during the day.

I’ve found that the study 1 cor 13 love is good in any situation – but I’m thinking that with a husband and bride doing it together – that has to be magic. I hope you find it so. It’s a little booklet – but leave room for the Bible because every devotion goes back into the Bible’s pages. Thank you Crissyanna – and God bless you.

I really, nearly, almost didn’t link up. I was expecting a “word of the year” linky this week – I thought, “what do I have to write about habits” – but the numbers – those matching 28’s – really – how could I resist. I hope you enjoy the little devotional – it’s like one of those little Daily Bread devotionals you see in churches – except it’s all written by me. Thank you Darnly – and God bless and keep you.

What a wonderful way to start the year.

Craig December 28, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Robbie, it’s been a very quiet – very humble – very low-key Christmas for me this year. But I remember last year and reading everybody’s advent posts up until Christmas – and I remember the little tiny letdown just after Christmas because of being so elevated during Advent. I don’t know if that’ll happen to you this year – but either way – I think you’re going to heart this little devo. Thank you – I’ll be in touch.

There’s always more to learn about love. I’d feel so blessed to learn from your devotional – such a beautiful way to start 2012… Focusing on love. ( and how can you encourage without some love thrown in?)

Reply

Craig December 28, 2011 at 2:08 pm

Lori, thank you. I’ve written here before that there are two guiding lights in my life – one is God’s revelation in our Bible – and second is first Corinthians 13. That’s why I’ve got the two blogs instead of just one – if I had only known how hard that would be to keep up. Anyway, thank you very much, I’ll be in touch, and you’re right – encouragement without love – not the same thing. God bless you.

Craig,

What a wonderful story!! How great that someone discovered you and your gift of spreading God’s love! I would feel honored to receive your devotional. You have inspired me in many ways, dear brother.
Also, I left a message for you in the comment section of my blog… don’t know if you subscribe to that (or even if you can subscribe to comments??), but it was in response to your comment and words I hope will bless you.

Kara

Kara, I went back and read your message – thank you, that was kind. And the story that I wrote today – that woman – I now affectionately call her grandma Joyce – she told me to. And I don’t think I’ve quite been discovered yet – but thank you. It’s funny – I had all the “editors” that I wanted to talk to lined up – you only got a certain amount of appointments – she wasn’t on my list – but SHE found me. That was nice. She’s an amazingly strong Christian woman. So Kara. Thank you, and God bless you. I’ll be in touch.

Craig December 28, 2011 at 7:24 pm

Linda, thank you, really, thank you. This last year I named “connect” – and everyone who has read me knows that it’s been filled with joy and not a small amount of trauma. But the whole year went just as ordered – I connected. Naming a year instead of having a resolution was an amazing thing. Maybe your year can be called change, or joy, or choices. I’m not sure what I’m going to call this next year – I’m leaning toward “seeing” – as in seeing Things the Way, God would see them – rather than just what my human senses can see and feel. Not sure yet. Anyway, thank you for finding me – I’ll be in touch soon for your addy – thank you for seeing me – and God bless you.

Craig: Thanks for writing about love. So many people need to know more about love than they do. Would love to have your booklet and your signature. Sharon

Reply

Craig December 28, 2011 at 7:27 pm

Sharon, everything I write on this blog comes back to love in one way or the other. I have two blogs because I have two big guiding lights – one is God’s word of course – the other one is just three verses from 1st Corinthians. That’s why I began to blogs instead of one – if I only knew how hard it would be to keep up two of them…

Anyway, my signature isn’t really worth much, it’s good for authenticating who I am – but not much more. If I can remember I’ll sign it – but really – it’s just my name. Thank you for finding me, thank you for your kind words, and God bless and keep you.

Just reading your first page has me smiling. I can so see Laska doing that with a ball of yarn. Reading your story of how you got published was great! I love how God works and moves to show HIS LOVE to others.

Reply

Craig December 28, 2011 at 7:32 pm

Katie, I wrote this in 2009, Laska’s predecessor is the kitty who actually finds his way into one of the devotionals. Laska is the love kitty – his predecessor was Froofy the miracle cat. And, if by “published” you meant getting paid by a company – and having them publish your words for you – then yes, I’m published. But it’s just a tiny booklet – it’s really no big thing. Oh, and that red haired lady – I’m now proud to call her, because she told me to, grandma Joyce. Mine was one of the last devotionals she published before she retired. Anyway, thank you Katie, I’ll be in touch, God bless you.

Eryn, my friend. You have been one of my happier finds in this year of blogging. You have blessed me more than you know. And God’s love? it’s kind of already my habit. That picture of the little pad type thing – that’s my little love flippy calendar. I already do a little bit of love every day – just one love per day. This blog was originally supposed to be just that. It kind of grew into it’s own thing. And I can thank Ann for motivating me to give these little booklets away – they’ve just been sitting there. Anyway, it’s not a chance to win – everybody that wants one gets one – and it really makes me smile to know I’ll be sending one to Texas! Thank you Eryn, God bless you, and your husband, and your babies.

I heart love! (Sorry, I tend to use “heart” as a verb – I heart “heart” as a verb ツ anyway, thank you – and at least I I’ll not be hoarding these little love devos anymore – I get to send one to you! First of all…I’m not commenting to win your book (I’m out of the running actually because I live in a different country) but I just had to stop by and wish you all the very best for the New Year. I’m way behind on my reading because Christmas is so time-consuming for me with the large family I have so I also have to thank you for your sweet comment you left, probably two weeks ago?) I can’t believe tomorrow is 3 weeks since I wrote anything!

Anyway, congratulations on this LOVE-ly publishing! I hope that you get many such opportunities. If I guess correctly, you’re going to be wishing you had tons more to give away based on the response I see here! Well, from my family to you and yours, may the new year be filled with the abundant blessings of God and I hope you have much peace and happiness and of course, LOVE.

Lisa Maria, it wasn’t a contest – everybody who wants one gets one – and you’re not the only one from a different country – much less a different continent getting one – the inter-webs makes the distances seem really small. I’ll be in touch for your address – I’ll let the post office figure out the postage ツ

and I think it’s a good thing that your life is too busy to blog lots of posts – your family needs you – your family needs your love – and you’re there doling it out – I think that’s beautiful. I haven’t been to a writing conference in years – I stopped submitting things a pretty long time ago – and naturally since blogging – with two blogs – I haven’t had time to do anything other than this writing. But who knows. I may go to another conference soon. And Lisa Maria, to you and your family – I wish abundant blessings as well – and love.

Jen, thank you for your kind words – thank you for reading. I’m really delighted to be able to send you a copy. Love really is just about everything in the Christian walk. I’ll be in touch to get your mailing address. Thank you again, and God bless and keep you.

Okay, I’m late to the party. But Craig . . .I loved that you had this published! That is a big thing! Don’t worry about sending me one. I don’t know how many you had! Now . . .if you happened to have oodles of them, and still do after all the give away, email me. I’d like to buy some to give to family and friends for Valentine’s Day! 🙂 God bless you and praying for more of this for you!

Debbie, it’s just a little thing – and published a few years ago. I’ve got plenty of them – if you e-mail me your mailing address before I get a chance to e-mail you – feel free – a little less work to do ツ and save up – that little pad looking thing that I pitched at the conference that year – I got some of those – I think, if I work at my bravery – I’ll put those up for sale – I call them my little flippy love calendar. I’ve got about 30 of them – I might continue to sell them – or have them available as an e-book maybe – moving forward you know – you know I need to. God bless you Debbie

Dude, put ’em up for sale! I’ll help get the word out if you do.

I guess I should – a whole lot of years – and learning – and experience went into that little love flippy calendar pad thing – it’s just like all the other little desktop calendar things – except it doesn’t have numbers – and it doesn’t have that little plastic folding stand. They already cost me more than eight dollars apiece to have printed up. Something soon though – Valentine’s Day is coming up. Anyway thank you my friend – thank you – just finished praying for you – God bless.

Thank you for praying! I so, so appreciate that.

Yes, I think you should sell them, and what better time than Valentine’s Day?

I’m glad that on your very first visit to my blog – I get to give you something to say thank you. God bless and keep you Sylvia.

Craig, I would pay you for this…in fact, if I don’t win, I WANT to pay you for this so I can actually have it…

And I think your corral + horses + lies booklet still needs to happen, and I would pay for that too, and publicize it…

Love you so much blogland friend (and “friend” is loaded with covenant meaning – and I mean that meaning to you fellow blogger…)

so much mailing to do – so many addresses to write on envelopes – so many envelopes to stuff – but I would absolutely heart sending you one – I’ll be in touch for your mailing address – I should get them mailed out this week. And thank you for the encouragement – I think maybe the horses and negative voices might just rate in e-book – you think? And the love flippy calendar from this post – the picture in the middle – the thing that I pitched Joyce Gibson – I have 30 of those – I think I might offer them up sometime soon – and then try to find some way to make 365 days of love an e-book – I have ideas – and I do need to find a way to make some income with my writing – so Cindy – thank you, really, thank you – and God bless and keep you and yours my friend.

I’m pretty sure these are all gone now (that is what I get for being behind on blog reading!) but I just couldn’t resist a comment saying what a great idea this was.

And also, I love your yarn analogy. So good.

Who among us who blog isn’t behind on reading. I’m dropping the number of posts I write from 10 per week, to 8 per week – the idea is to give me a little more time to read blogs that I heart. And yarn, love, kitten…thank you. God bless. And watch your email ツ

I do still have some left – I’d be delighted to send you one. Just remember – it’s just a little booklet – that’s all – and it was written a few years ago – well before I learned how to write better by reading people like Ann Voskamp. I’ll go send you an e-mail now – because I need your mailing address. Thank you very much – and God bless and keep you Linda.
